A heart of fire

Feb 4, 2026

To friends: We're looking for a research engineer to work with us for an intense, month-long sprint to get important work over the line. If successful, it is a guaranteed career highlight and story for your grandchildren.

Two days ago, I saw something that made me want to cry.

Transcranial ultrasound localization microscopy image of my brain. The field of view is about 3cm x 3cm x 3cm.
Lev, Jeff, and I created a 3D image of the microvasculature in my brain, captured with ultrasound. We imaged across an intact skull, no surgery involved.

This is the first time that anyone has created high-resolution images of the brain like this.

I've dreamed about interfacing with the brain for years, and believe that increasing human expressivity is one of the most beautiful things you can do. To see an image like this and think that we might be close... oh god.

2026-02-02 23:09 I am just paralyzed by happiness... haven't picked up my food, or gone downstairs for a cable...

We're confident we have some of the highest-quality brain data in the world, and what's next is to decode thoughts and prototype BCI experiences. We're looking around intently for a collaborator to work with us and very quickly make it a reality.

There's a real dream here. It will be intense: think 80-hour weeks for a month. But if it succeeds, it will likely be widespread news and a precipitating point in human history — the first demonstration of rich thought decoding, to neurotech as GPT-1 was to AI.

This problem deserves our very best. We're looking for someone extraordinary, a highly technical mind who carries deep thoughtfulness and care for all humans. More info here.

Addendum: the work is beautiful. I think by the end we can get images of the brain that look like this:
